Expression of the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) protein, and correct membrane insertion, is required for efficient iodide uptake in thyroid and lactating breast. Radioactive iodide is routinely utilized to target remnant thyroid and metastasis after total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer.
